Strengthening Markets for Agriculture and Rural Transformation (SMART)

The Government of Pakistan and specifically the Government of the Punjab, has contracted a loan from the World Bank, called Strengthening Markets for Agriculture and Rural Transformation - Program for Results (SMART).

SMART is a transformative project that supports 15 out of the 25 areas of reform of PUNJAB’s agriculture, including significant changes in the wheat marketing, produce markets, irrigation and water conservation, it stimulates the agribusiness sector.

The Government of Punjab Program for Agriculture and rural transformation emphasizes enabling productivity, increasing competitiveness in Agricultural marketing and trade and enhancing resilience.

The program will be implemented under the coordination of the Planning and Development Department in coordination with Agriculture, Food, Irrigation, Livestock and Dairy and Industries Department.

The SMART Punjab P for R will support selected parts of the broader Government program over 5 years. These selected parts will consist of focus on increasing crop and livestock productivity, research and extension policy, transition towards HVA and CSA, livestock breeding and preventive care, agribusiness, enhancing resilience and inclusiveness and improving the functions of crop and livestock markets including food safety.

  • Increased value addition and competitiveness of crops and livestock.
  • Enhanced resilience of smallholder farmers to climate change and natural disasters
